Free beach access, board rental from the guys on the sand runs about 50,000 IDR/hour (~$3.20) which is half what the shops charge. Water and sand are clean in the morning, less so by afternoon once the current pulls debris in. Great for beginners, the beach breaks here are forgiving compared to Uluwatu.

A young coconut is 20,000-25,000 IDR (~$1.60), beanbags at the sand-front warungs are free if you order a drink — no cover charge anywhere I found. Watched the surfers silhouetted against the sunset for the price of a coconut, one of the best-value evenings of the whole trip.

250,000 IDR (~$16) a night for a simple room, no AC unless you pay a bit extra — which we did after the first sweaty night. The guesthouse's pool, built around a permaculture garden, is genuinely lovely and well kept, even if our room itself was basic. Wifi was solid enough to work remotely from a pool lounger. Cleaning happens every other day rather than daily. For the price, still one of the better-value stays in Canggu.

A bit of a scooter ride out from Canggu — about 45,000 IDR (~$3) in petrol if you are on your own bike, or 150,000 IDR (~$10) for a Grab each way — but the limestone cliffs and turquoise water are worth the detour on a day you are not rushing. Free beach entry, one of the cleanest stretches of sand we found on this whole budget trip, no beach-club markup here.

Under 30,000 IDR (~$2) for rice with shredded chicken, tempeh, sambal matah and a boiled egg — genuinely better than the 90,000 IDR 'Instagram warungs' in central Canggu. Open kitchen, felt clean, food was clearly cooked that same day. This is the actual budget-travel win of the trip.

About 370,000 IDR (~$24) a night — we moved guesthouses partway through the trip specifically to save on transport to Tegallalang and the Monkey Forest the next day, both a quick ride from here versus a long haul from Canggu. It's a bit outside central Ubud, best with a scooter, but the staff were genuinely warm and the room was spotless. No pool, but at this price and for one night, we didn't mind.

Grab-hailed a driver for the day for about 400,000 IDR (~$26) split between the four of us in our hostel group — far cheaper than a private tour. Entrance donations at each viewpoint add up (three separate 15-25k IDR asks along the path), budget for that. Muddy after the previous night's rain, real shoes recommended.

80,000 IDR (~$5) felt like a lot for our budget day — genuinely one of the pricier stops relative to everything else on this trip. Pretty, but if money's tight I'd rank this as skippable versus the free waterfall we did after. A macaque also stole a hostel-mate's snack bar clean out of an unzipped bag pocket.

15,000 IDR (~$1) entry, by far the best value stop of the entire trip. A short scramble down through a narrow canyon to a waterfall with light beams cutting through the gap above at midday — go between 11am-1pm for the light shaft, arrive before a tour bus does or you'll be sharing the tiny pool with thirty people. Rocks are slippery, water shoes help.
